Carol padded down the hallway over Mexican tile that felt soothing to her bare feet. She needed something to cool her off. Her skin was still feverish with Cody’s touch, and the taste of him still burned her lips.

She tried the first door on the right and found herself in what was obviously Cody’s office, a big room windowed from floor to ceiling on its southern exposure, the glass framing a vista of red rocks and a distant horizon shadowed by clouds and mountains. Pearl-gray late-afternoon light filtered in, illuminating his desk and shelf after shelf of artifacts: Pots, weapons, kachinas, breastplates, bones, shells, and silverwork. But despite the quantity of things, there was no sense of clutter or disarray; each piece held an honored place. For a second Carol wondered what it would be like to cherish the past rather than regret it, but she quickly shut the door on that thought and the room both.

Finding the guest room, Carol tossed her clothes on the bed and headed for the bathroom. The shower was hot and stinging, and she stood under it with clenched teeth, welcoming the punishment as her just desert. Why had she ever come here? Rancho Encantado. She knew from high school Spanish what the word meant: Enchanted … Charmed. Oh, was the whole world conspiring against her? Was destiny toying with her? Why had she gone and fallen so completely in love with Cody?

Tears mixed with water on her upturned face as she stood there, overwhelmed by questions that seemed to have no answers.
